I had a cracked windshield. All of my previous insurance companies had a $50 deductible for windshield only claims. I called the USAA line which connects you to Safelite. They quoted me $494 and informed me that USAA covers windshields under the comprehensive, so I would be responsible for $250 (my deductible) of the bill. I have never had a windshield deductible over $50, so I was really taken aback. At any rate, I have had multiple windshields replaced in the past and thought almost $500 sounded a bit high. So I went to the Safelite website directly and put in the information without USAA. They quoted me $314.95. That a $159 discount to NOT use insurance. Plus, then I don't have the claim.

But, wait! There's more!!! I went to the USAA site to double check my coverage and found that they never took off the car that I had a total loss on 2.5 months ago, So, I have been paying insurance on it this whole time. The representative I just spoke to took it off and backdated it, but....

It gets better. After she correctly removed the totaled car, I noticed that the old work truck I had listed as "in storage" was still on the policy. That was my fault, I forgot to call when I sold it. However, I had her remove the truck also and my policy then WENT UP by $60. I asked why that was, and she said it was because by taking off the car and truck I lost my multicar discount. Keep in mind that I still have TWO cars insured by USAA. The problem (she says) is that one is registered in TN and one in MA, so USAA puts them on TWO DIFFERENT POLICIES. I reminded her that USAA serves military personnel who often have cars registered in multiple states, but she said there was nothing she could do about it. She offered to let me speak to a manager. I waited on hold a while and she came back to tell me they would have to call me back tomorrow.

It isn't tomorrow yet, so I am waiting for the call. However, since it is company policy, I doubt there is anything they can do about it. I am going to be looking for a new insurance provider - but not before I tell my many, many fellow military friends and family that USAA is now just one of the many companies that targets, rather than helps, military families.

if cars are in different locations-not a USAA rule, they don't qualify for a multi car policy discount because it is about WHERE the coverage is, not premium based on what is owned. Each state has different rules and regulations on what you can write on a policy.. And if a car was totaled out, it is usually left on the policy if you are going to replace the totaled car-so you keep the discount rather get an increase in the interim period..not unusual to do that.

Update: I missed the call. They never called again.

I got the windshield replaced for $223 outright from another vendor in the area.

USAA has gotten very poor in many areas. Higher insurance.

Higher mortgage loan fees, with loans difficult to get even with excellent rating and history. Car buying service quoting higher prices than the customer can easily get on their own from the same dealer. Worst experience for me was about a year and a half ago, I tried to refinance my home at the lower rates. USAA did state up front there would be a fee ($300 if I recall) if the quote was approved that would be rolled into the total loan fees if completed.

(No other company I requested quotes from had any up front fees, and if I had done those first I certainly never would have proceeded with the USAA request.) However, the response that came back demanded additional $40k (on a $160k home) down to refinance a loan which was already VA guaranteed at more than currently owed. I looked at this as denial of the loan quote. I refinanced with another company, at a lower rate, over $1000 less in fees, and nothing down with no problem. Good thing for me, they did deny it.

Two months later when the $300 had still not been refunded to my savings account I called. They insisted they had approved the loan, and therefore kept the fees, even though demanding $40k down was in no way approving the original quote. All attempts to speak to supervisors failed. Complaints on their website and messages sent were repeatedly directed to their loan department, even though my complaint was about their loan department.

This was basically fraud, or at least a policy that encouraged fraud.

The truth was they were currently overloaded on loan refinances and had more commitments than they had investment funds. Making a ridiculous demand for additional money, allowed them to indirectly deny the loans but keep the fees.

I had USAA for many years and a little over a year ago switched due to lower rates for the same coverage from another company. However, how did you manage to get a policy with comprehensive without the "full glass" option?

At least whenever used the online tool to check costs for adding a car, which I often did when looking to buy another car, "full glass" was always automatic regardless of deductible chosen. Pretty much every company I checked when looking for a cheaper policy either had it automatic, or for a very small additional cost.
