Veterans, please be aware of USAA. They are one of the biggest scams in insurance history for veterans.

Heres what happened to me: when I filed my claim, I was first assigned an adjuster and spoke with them.

A week later, I was given a new adjuster. Two weeks after that, I was passed off to an investigator. Then another week later, I had to speak with yet another investigator. After that, months went by with no contact at all.

I left multiple messages, reached out several times, and got no response.

Finally, eight months after my initial claim.

I received an email saying my claim had been denied.

If you have the time and patience to deal with endless runarounds and delays, then USAA is your company. But if you value your property, your peace of mind, and your hard-earned money, I strongly suggest paying a little more and going with a different insurance company that will actually honor their coverage.

USAA may market themselves as veteran friendly, but in reality, they are a cut rate company offering cut rate coverage.

Loss:
$22

Preferred solution: The coverage I paid for.

User's recommendation: Stay away from this company. Do not let the low rates fool you

AI Highlights
  • - They're asking about insurance.
  • - Dad is a veteran; son in the military; husband on disability.
  • - Open enrollment next year; Marketplace taxes owed.

Good morning. I was wondering if you have medical health insurance?

My dad was a veteran, and my son is now in the military. My husband and I need health insurance as I am the only one working, as he is on disability. I myself have been out of work due to a back and kidney infection, and of course, no one wants to help you unless you have health insurance. At my job, I have to wait for open enrollment, and that is next year.

My husband is on Medicare, but PART A ONLY, as I usually carry health insurance. If he gets health insurance for himself, he will be penalized, and checks will be less, which we cannot afford. We have gone through the Marketplace, and due to going to them, we owe taxes, as we are on a payment plan as is. So that hurt us more than helped us.

Not sure if you can help or know of anyone that can?

I am reaching for straws here. My sister mentioned you because of our dad.

Pros:
  • Was told you help family members of a veteran
Cons:
  • You cannot help

Preferred solution: insurance help

Dear USAA, My name is Carlton J....

Updated by user May 16, 2026

I am not one who prefers skipping out on my obligations, but today's Banks, Credit Card companies, loans, finance companies are SHARKS WHO LEGALLY STEAL ECERY PENNY YOU HAVE IF THEY ARE NOT CONTROLLED. USSA IS ONE SUCH COMPANY.

Original review May 01, 2026
Dear USAA,
My name is Carlton. I have been with USAA for 11 years, have had loans, credit cards, etc., and am now seeking help from an interested true executive who has the authority to make a logical decision.
I am 80 years old, a widower; my wife died 3 1/2 years ago unexpectedly while we were living full-time in a motor home.

I could not continue with that arrangement without her help, so I left my motor home with a consignment dealer to sell, and I lost $50,000. I then came back to Virginia to live.
I have a personal loan with USAA in the amount of $18,800 at 17.74% interest. I am required to pay $583/month.
I have a $25,000 debt to NFCU.
During the past 3 1/2 years or so, I have incurred $16,500 in unplanned legal bills, loss of my wife's Social Security income, medical bills, and car repairs, and have reached a point that my income will not allow me to continue these payments.
I contacted USAA 5-6 different times over the past 5-7 days and got nowhere, as your junior employees have zero authority to do any real banking.
I explained all the above; I was told to make a new loan application. I knew that this would be denied, and I knew that running a credit report for the application would lower my FICO score, making future banking credit cost me more.

What a corrupt system the banks, credit card companies, and credit reporting agencies run as so-called legitimate businesses.
So finally, with no other option but the credit resolution company of (J.G.

Whitworth) and/or (Accredited Credit Relief) and others who advised me to stop paying this loan. They gave me a 55-month program to pay way less in monthly payments than I am paying you and others, and they would batch up a number of people with financial issues and get a negotiated settlement.
I do not want to do this if it can be avoided.
So what I must achieve is a restructured loan, lower interest to 10%, and a lower monthly payment to no more than $300/month.
Will someone help me at USAA?
Thank you
Carlton
Cons:
  • Too many young non competent employees with no authority

User's recommendation: try to do what is right binspite of the money grabbers.

First of all, stop liking your own comments. Secondly, please go the other way and deal with people who told you not to pay.

Calling their junior employees incompetent and the whole industry money-grabbing and corrupt, publicly, does not help your cause.

Good afternoon, I am asking for any help to get this issue resolved A.S.A.P. We have been trying to get this resolved for the last 10 months. When USAA prematurely sent in form TD-420 to Washington State DOL stating the vehicle was a total loss before the claim was even settled, we ended up wanting to retain the vehicle and settled with USAA to keep the vehicle and I have had it repaired. We ended up going back and forth trying to get the vehicle's title and it took over 5 months to receive it, not knowing that it was deemed a total loss until we went in to get the title in my daughter's name and the DOL stated that this vehicle was deemed a total loss and it can't be titled, registered, or even driven. This is my daughter's only transportation for work and now we were told to park the car until this issue is resolved. I have been in contact with Marianne Raymer this week and she is trying to help fix these issues but nothing is showing up at the DOL side of things. The Washington State DOL has stated to resolve these issues what needs to be done is:
They need a retraction sent in to remove the total loss
They need it reported as owner retained. Until these 2 things are done nothing can be done to title this vehicle and tabs issued so this vehicle can be back on the road. Please respond as soon as possible, this issue should have been cleared up months ago, the date of loss was June 20, 2025

Was it totaled due to repair costs exceeding it’s worth or was there structural damage that automatically rendered it not drivable? You may want to closely read anything you signed with USAA in the owner-retained agreement. Also, rating them one star and posting this on a public third-party site is definitely not helping your cause.

They have gone downhill over the last 10 years, and seem to be accelerating in that direction.

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

I have been a USAA member for over 50 years and used to adore them, both for banking and for insurance. However, over the past 10 years, they have consistently gone downhill. Last fall, they sent me a check for $325, out of the blue, with no explanation except a particularly vague phrase that it was 'compensation for my difficulties,' and a note that I could ask for more if I wanted to.

I spent considerable time trying to figure out what this was all about, but no one at USAA wants to explain exactly what this check is intended to reimburse me for. I have therefore not cashed it, in spite of occasional reminders that I need to cash it. I have sent letters to the President of USAA, which are not returned or answered at all, about this.

I also suffered a major identity theft attempt to take over my accounts at USAA in the fall of 2024, which continues at a lower level to this day. I did not suffer any financial loss, but USAA refuses to provide any details about what happened.

In the area of insurance, USAA has turned to the use of insurance credit scores, which are prepared by Lexis-Nexis and use all sorts of junk 'data' to create a junk score. I spent an enormous amount of time and effort going through the data that LN revealed was using to create a score for me and identified a very large number of 'associations' that were completely incorrect. Neither LN nor USAA have replied to my letters about insurance scores.

Overall, I am ready to give up on USAA entirely. I only stay because my wife does not want to give up a 54-year financial relationship that used to be very good. No more.

Pros:
  • Seem to be financially stable
  • They
Cons:
  • Insurance ratings are illogical
  • Have become opaque about what is happening

Preferred solution: An explanation for the check they sent me, an explanation of what they are doing to fix the mess with the Insurance credit scores, and an explanation of the identity theft attack on my accounts that started in September 2024.

User's recommendation: Stay away. USAA has been trying to become a mega bank, and they no longer care about their customers, which supposedly actually own the company.

USAA and LN did nothing. The check is not from USAA.

The identity theft scammers are waiting to see if you deposit the check (to verify the banking information they have on you) so they can drain your account. USAA can’t verify/explain what they did not send. The scammer is also creating associations with other online sites and businesses in your name as to create a profile of you with information they can verify.

That LN score? Thank the scammers for that.

I think you are a bit mistaken. USAA confirmed to me that they sent me the check.

They just can't explain why, for some unstated reason. And LN sent me a letter telling me that one of the prime reasons why they gave me a lower Credit-based Insurance score was because they had "no evidence that anyone living in the household had ever gone to college". They evidently use the addresses of places I have lived and have a check mark for addresses if they are "college towns". And LN doesn't consider that Pittsburgh, Boston, DC, Saratoga Springs, NY, Paris, or NYC are "college towns".

And no one has evidently told them that USAA was founded by military officers, who HAD to have a college degree to get a commission. USAA did not start accepting enlisted service members till the 1990s, I think. Those of us who joined USAA in 1972 were ALL commissioned officers or military academy students, and we would not have been accepted by USAA unless we had degrees. It is all about use of AI methods - "associating" factors, based on statistics.

Which can sometimes be useful, but too often can be very, very wrong. And neither LN nor the insurance companies will ever admit that they are wrong.

I stand by my comment. You have no idea who you are communicating with.

(I doubt that it’s really USAA or LN). Identity theft, unexplained check, LN rating/involvement after 50+ years?

It screams scam. I wish you luck.

Issue not resolved. Sent a letter to customer service.

No response yet to the letter. An aged parent is not capable of handling the situation. USAA has thus far refused to talk with her daughter who was on a call with the company.

Credit card bills are not being paid. Insurance coverage is being canceled due to nonpayment of the bill. This has been going on since August of 2025.

Original review Mar 04, 2026
We have, since August of 2025, tried to communicate issues affecting Arvella Gorsche. Arvella is a VISA card holder for more than 15 years.

Please note her birthdate of 03/19/1927. The last four of her SS number are 7632. Bills have been unpaid, insurances canceled, and communications are broken due to privacy constraints. Her daughter, Val Marie Gorsche Rozich, has been a person of record with rights to communicate with USAA about any business involved with the account.

This past fall, Val Marie received a letter from USAA indicating that USAA no longer recognizes her as being on the account. Arvella is soon to be 99 years old. She is legally blind. She can no longer write legibly.

She can no longer recognize when bills must be paid or licenses must be renewed.

Val Marie Gorsche Rozich must be contacted to assume control so that bills are paid and necessary issues are resolved. Please help us.

Preferred solution: Second party recognized so as to complete business transactions like paying bills, making changes to insurance coverage and just plain answering questions.

User's recommendation: trust is questionable

  • - 25-year member says USAA no longer serves military or veterans and fights claims.

As a member of 25 years, I can say this company is no longer the military or veterans. As an 80% disabled veteran, they have done nothing but protect me.

They fight insurance claims, don't represent their clients to other insurers during events, overcharge (their prices are way above maker average), and they don't work for the customer. It's a shame. Wayne Peacock ran the company into the ground when he was in charge.

USAA- our number one job is to hire outside. Adjusters that specialize in saving the insurer money!
