USAA has been our insurer for over 20 years. We recently had a carport collapse during a winter snow and ice storm.

Our brand-new BBQ grill was under the carport at the time and was destroyed with the collapse. (We are literally still paying on the item!) When submitting for personal property on the claim, we were told that the BBQ is not covered because the carport is considered an "awning" and is not part of the building. They are paying almost $15,000 to rebuild an "awning"...which includes residing the entire side of the house because it was an attached carport and was damaged in the collapse. But, they won't cover a $600 grill that was under the carport when it collapsed.

When we spoke with the adjuster as well as his supervisor, we were told that "...had a tree branch fallen on the grill, it would be covered, but because it was a carport, it is not". We asked where specifically in our policy they were getting the info to make this decision, and neither one could point us to specific verbiage regarding this denial. It was basically up to them to deny the item, and they wouldn't budge on it.

In 20 years, we have never made a homeowner's claim on the policy. The BBQ is less than what we pay in premiums every year.

The denial seems petty and the dollar amount is insignificant in the grand scheme of things, yet they refuse to budge. However, we do not refuse to budge! We will be changing insurance companies as soon as the carport claim is finalized and the rebuild is complete.

They should be sued for false advertising!! They are not made for what our military folk are made of.

They are dishonorable, not courageous in their decision-making, and not committed to helping those who were willing to risk it all. They do not deserve military support!

User's recommendation: Find someone else to cover your home and vehicles!
